What Has Your Experience Been Working As A Foreclosure Defense Attorney?
I’ve been an attorney for 20 years. I’m also a retired NYPD captain, so before I became an attorney, I worked for The New York City Police Department. I retired in September of 2000, which was the same time that I started my legal career at a large international firm. My first foreclosure case was a case of an elderly woman who was scammed as part of a financial scheme. I began defending homeowners in foreclosure long before the market really tanked in 2008, so I’m one of the few people who have almost 20 years of experience in defending foreclosures and representing homeowners.
Since the market crashed in 2008 and the real estate bubble burst, a lot of attorneys think that they can handle foreclosure cases, but they really don’t know how to fight a lawsuit. They’ll try to settle but if they’re unable to settle it, they’re really at a disadvantage because they don’t know exactly what they are doing. I’ve been fortunate that I’ve actually made some of the law in defending homeowners in New York State through written Court decisions and won some of the appeals that other attorneys representing homeowners use.
What Do You Want Readers To Gain From Reading This Book?
I hope that I’ll be able to give homeowners who are interested in defending foreclosure cases levels of detail that they can’t get in other places. For beginners, I hope to give them an understanding of the process and an overview. Unfortunately, many in foreclosure stick their heads in the sand and want to ignore it and hope that it goes away, which is exactly the worst thing that you can do. No matter where you are, when you’re served with a foreclosure action, the worst thing you could do is ignore it.
